A venomous snake coiled around a sleeping porcupine. It felt as if it had finally found a safe and warm shelter. But the porcupine woke up and raised all its quills. The snake felt terrible pain, but instead of letting go, it tightened its grip. The quills sank deeper and deeper into its body. Agonizing in pain, it still didn't let go and eventually bled to death. Actually, the porcupine didn't kill the snake; its own stubbornness to hold on despite the pain did. In psychology, this is called trauma bonding. Often in life, we too stick to bad relationships and people who keep hurting us. We mistake the pain for a bond and cannot find the courage to separate.
