Success is something you attract, not something you pursue. Success is looking for a good place to stay. So instead of pursuing it, you work on yourself. Personal development. The main question to ask yourself at work is not what you are getting; the main question to ask yourself at work is, what are you becoming? The big question is not how much am I getting paid here. The big question is what am I becoming here. Because true happiness is not contained in what you get. Happiness is contained in what you become. There are many things that can ruin your doing well. We live in a quite dangerous world, so you not only have to be wise, you also have to be careful. Take full responsibility for what happens to you.
It is one of the highest forms of human maturity to accept full responsibility. It is the day you know you have passed from childhood to adulthood. The day you accept full responsibility. And another note, learn to harvest in the autumn without apology. Without apology if you are doing well and without complaint if you are not doing well. I had a list of reasons to say why I wasn't doing well. I used to blame the government. I blamed taxes. Look at what you have left after they take everything. And they expect you to do well. You used to blame the weather. I blamed traffic, I used to blame my car, I blamed the manufacturers, I used to blame the company, I blamed company policy, I used to blame the training program, I used to blame the economy, I blamed the community. Good list to justify not doing well, right? I thought it was good. I used to blame everything external. I will give you a little philosophy that helped transform my life. For your notes, here it goes.
It is not what happens, that determines the quality or quantity of your life, it is not what happens, but rather it is what you do, that changes everything . It is not the events, it is what you do about it. Someone says, "Yes, but you don't understand the disappointments I have had." Come on, everyone has had their share. Disappointments are not special gifts reserved for the poor. Everyone has them. The difference is in what you do with them. It is not the weather. I used to blame the weather and I discovered that it also rains on the rich. So look, that does not help. I wondered why two people could work for the same company and one earn twice the money. That used to baffle me, and maybe they were the same age. They had graduated from the same school, lived in the same community, worked for the same company, same products, same services, had the same traffic, the same problems, and one made 1,000 a month and the other made 2,000 a month.
That was my baffling question. Why would this long list be the same and the money double? I wondered what the difference is between 1,000 a month and 2,000 a month. And I don't mean 1,000 a month, right? I could calculate that. But what makes the difference? Why would one person do twice as well, three times as well? Economically speaking, I know there's more than one way to do well, I get that. But in this little limited area called compensation , what is the difference? Now, if you can't get more time, and you can't, what could you get more of that would make a difference in economic results?
And here is the keyword. Put it in your notes, we are going to consider it. The word is value. You can't get more time, but you can create more value. First lesson in economics. Everyone should learn it from the time they are old enough to know what a dollar is. How to earn it, how to get it, how to keep it, and what to do with it. First lesson in economics. We are primarily paid for value. That is the first lesson. Bring value to the marketplace. That is how you get paid. You are not paid for time . I know it takes time to bring value to the marketplace, but you are paid for the value, not for the time. Is it possible to become twice as valuable in the marketplace and make twice as much money in the same time? You could become three times as valuable, make three times as much money in the same time. Is that possible? The answer is yes. Yes. Always yes, right? Life is known as the great Yes. It is possible to do better in the marketplace if you work primarily on yourself. People have asked me over the last 24 years how to
have an above-average income, and the answer is by becoming an above-average person. Have an above-average handshake . There are people seeking success who don't even work on their handshake, which is such an easy place to start. They let it slide, they don't get it. Develop an above-average smile. Develop an above-average enthusiasm and an above-average interest in others. Develop an above-average intensity to win. That changes everything. Probably one of the most frustrating experiences in life is seeking an above-average job and salary without becoming an above-average person. It’s called frustration. Work harder on yourself than you do on your job. If they had asked me at 25, "Mr. Ron, are you a hard worker?" I would have said, "Yes, I am a hard worker. Check my track record. I work as hard as anyone." And it was true, I was a hard worker. I really was. And that was my problem. I was working hard at my job, but I wasn't working hard on myself. And that was the reason for my lack of progress.
If someone gives you a million dollars, you had better become a millionaire quickly. That is how you keep the money . Otherwise, it will effectively disappear. Someone once said, "If you took all the money in the world and shared it equally among everyone, it would soon be back in the same pockets. " Incredible. Some people look for more money, but in the wrong direction. The guy says, "I need more money. I'm going to work on my boss.""Well, number one, bosses are known for something. They don't handle company money carelessly.
I've never seen a boss get excited and triple someone's salary. I mean, they don't behave that irrationally. That is not what you should work on. There are people who say," I'll go on strike to earn more. "" Well, big deal. The problem with that game is that once you start, it never ends. You will always have to strike. And I'll tell you what you get by demanding. Small crumbs. Barely enough. And now inflation wins that game. The guy demands 10%.
Inflation is 12. He is two behind. I mean, it never ends. So you see, that is not the key to success. Maybe to survival, but not to success. Look, it’s not what you get by tricks, it’s not what you get by demanding, it’s what you get for your performance. What counts, for things to change for you. You have to change. Life and business are like the changing seasons. A good way to describe life is that it's like the seasons. You cannot change the seasons, but you can change yourself. Now, the four main life lessons, here they go. Number one, learn how to handle the winters. That is the first lesson. They come after the autumns with regularity. Some long, some short, some hard and others easy, but they keep coming. Learn how to handle the nights; they come after the days. Learn how to handle the difficulty; it comes after the opportunity. Learn how to handle the recessions; they always follow the advances. For the last 6,000 years it hasn't changed, but you must learn how to handle it. And there are all kinds
of winters, right? The winter when you can't figure it out. The winter when everything falls apart. The winter when everything fails. The winter when nothing works, when you have no money and you've had your heart broken. These are types of winters. There are all kinds, economic winters, social winters , personal winters. When your heart is broken into a thousand pieces and the nights are unusually long, your prayers seem not to rise higher than your head.
It is wintertime. Disappointments come, that's normal, it's part of life. But the question is, how do you handle it? The winters that come, the disappointments and the hard times. Well, you can't get rid of January by tearing it off the calendar, but here is what you can do. You can get stronger, you can get wiser, and you can get better. The winters won't change, but you can. And that is how life changes for you. Don't wish for fewer problems, wish for more skills.
Don't wish for fewer challenges, wish for more wisdom. That is the key. First lesson, learn how to handle the winters . Here is the second. Learn how you can take advantage of the spring. That is the second. Spring is called opportunity. And spring follows winter. What a great place. If you had to put it somewhere, it would be right there after winter. And how often does spring follow winter? Every year with regularity. 6,000 years. You can almost count on it. Opportunity always comes.
Days follow nights, isn't that fantastic? Opportunity follows difficulty, but what you must learn to do—underline this word in the key phrase—take advantage of, underline that word. You must learn how to take advantage of the spring. Just because spring arrives doesn't mean you will do well when autumn comes. You have to do something with it. In fact, you have to get good at one of two things in life.
Plant in the spring or beg in the autumn or get someone to do it for you. Those are the alternatives. Another thing you must do, take advantage of the springs quickly because there are only a few. We have all been given only a handful of springs. They don't last forever. Life is quite brief. So read every book you can get your hands on about what to do with your springs while they are here. And make the most of them, they are soon gone. Here is the third great lesson in life. Learn how to protect your crops all summer long. You have to tend to what you start. Indeed, as soon as you have planted your garden in the spring, the insects and weeds come out to take it from you. And here is the next truth.
They will take it from you. You have to learn to stop the intruder from taking all the good things you start. It is one of the challenges. All values must be defended. Political values, social values, community values, family values , marriage values, friendship values, business values. Every garden must be tended to all summer long. Fourth great lesson in life. Learn how to harvest in the fall without complaining. That is the difference in how your life turns out. It is not what happens, it is what you do. Here is one of the key questions of the evening. Starting tomorrow, what are you going to do to change the direction of your life? Good question. What are you going to do starting tomorrow that will make a difference? If you don't do something starting tomorrow that makes a difference, guess what? Everything will stay the same. And if you want to know what the next 5 years will be like, look at the last five, because the next five will be like the last ones, unless you, key point, change it all tomorrow.
Or change a little, or change something , or don't change, it is time to choose , you can do whatever you want, but it is good to know that any day you can change your whole life. What can you do starting tomorrow? That makes a difference. Good question.
