Success is something you attract by becoming an attractive person. Success is not something you pursue. Every person's income is determined mainly by their philosophy, not the economy. Your personal philosophy is like a guidance system that helps you decide what to do and what not to do. With the information you receive, what you learn , and what you know, we decide. That is what personal philosophy is all about.
The more we learn, the more we know, the better we can make decisions on the two main things your philosophical guidance system does. For your notes, number one, it helps you see the dangers on one side so you can avoid them. But here is the other thing your guidance system does. Personal philosophy helps you see the opportunities on the other side so you can expand and maximize them. And this is called the game of life. Minimize the dangers and maximize the opportunities. One of the great keys of these early years of the 21st century, pay attention. If you just observe, you can catch signals; success leaves clues . And if you become a better observer of those who win and those who lose, those who move forward and those who fall behind, and just take good mental notes and say, "I am going to adjust what I do based on what I see." Here is number two. We learn a lot from others based on what we hear. Here is some good advice. Be a selective listener.
Listen to voices of value, people with experience, ideas, and a reputation who have something valuable to share. But write this down. Read every book you need to read. To be as wealthy as you want to be, as healthy as you want to be, as prosperous, as productive, as unique as you want to be. Read all those books. Do not leave those books unread. Now, here is the next way to learn. Learning from other people's experience, whether negative or positive. If you know someone who has ruined their life for 40 years, you should say, "John, spend a day with me and I will bring my notebook to take good notes." Someone with a good presence like you, a beautiful family, reasons to succeed, and you threw it all away. Teach me how for 40 years you have ruined everything. And he tells you and you take good notes, learning from the negative side of someone's experience. Now, how do we learn more things that help us readjust our way of thinking to avoid dangers and maximize opportunities? Here is the first,
learning from personal experience. One way to learn to do something well, what is it? First, do it wrong, right? You mess up and then you say, "Wow, that turned out expensive. I'm not going to do that again." So, one way to learn to do it well is to first do it wrong. Sometimes a negative experience ends up being positive. They say that if you survive your first heart attack, you could now live to be very old. Why?
Well, that first heart attack, if you survive it, is called a wake-up call. And maybe the doctor told you one more of these and you're done for. And you said, "Wow. Ouch," and you go straight to the health food store and start reading every book you find on good nutrition, how you could avoid another heart attack, and you start running, walking, and doing all of that. And this total lifestyle change can save your life and make you live many more years. This is one of the best pieces of advice I received from my mentor. He said, "Mr. Rohn, if you change, everything will change for you. If you start making personal changes, your income will change, your health will change, your future will change, everything will change. If you are willing to start changing." And where does the inspiration to look ahead come from? Here it is: learning to set goals . Number one, decide what you want. It requires more than 5 minutes. Take the time and decide what you want: where you want to go; what you want to do the
next 10 or 20 years; what you would like to become; how many skills you want to learn; what books you want to read; and the people you want to meet, cities you want to visit, the experiences you would like to have in this period of time. Start thinking about all of that. The next key, write it all down. Building a life is like building a house. You wouldn't start building the house without having it finished. Wouldn't it seem ridiculous starting to build a house if it wasn't designed first? They would take you to a safe place. Building a life is much more important than building a house.
And yet, people treat it so lightly and so carelessly when it comes to planning what they want their life to be. So I ask you to stop being indifferent. Start designing your future for yourself, for your family, for your business, for your life. Decide what you want. Here is the next piece of advice. Include everything on your list of goals. Small things, insignificant to others, but important to you. So set goals. Goals that excite you, goals that thrill you. Put everything on your list. Good question for your notes. How did this convention center get here?
Someone saw it when the land was empty. And how could you see a convention center if it’s not here? It's the only way it gets to be here. And someone has to see it so clearly that they can draw it saying, "This is the convention center." You’ll say, "No, it’s not there." And they say, "Yes. This is the convention center." The artist's rendering shows you a picture of what doesn't exist yet. That is the beginning of imagination. To turn nothing into something, this is what you do. Imagine the possibilities. You truly won't be as happy if you don't produce. And here goes the next piece of advice on this. Produce to the maximum while it is possible. Producing a little is fine, producing enough is fine, producing something to get by is fine, but why not aim for maximum productivity? Andrew Carnegie, who built the steel industry in the 1930s, said the following: "I am going to spend the first half of my life accumulating money. I am going to spend the last half of my life giving it all away." He was so inspired by that goal
that in the first half of his life he accumulated 400 million dollars, which in the 30s was a lot of money, a mega-fortune. And do you know what he did in the last half of his life? He gave it all away, absolutely. Both imagination and faith are powerful forces, but we still don't have a hotel , we still don't have a house. And even though they are powerful forces, it's just the beginning. Now imagination and faith must be put into action or they are wasted. But the finishing touch of the miracle process is this. Get to work. Get to work and build a better career. Get to work and build good health. There is no good health without work. When did we start hearing that phrase "no pain"? What? "No gain." You have to do the work. You can read all the books until you become wise. You can have faith and believe until it is something extraordinary. But now you have to get to work. And if you learn to value the work that produces the miracle of good health, the miracle of a career, the miracle of a relationship
, the miracle of a fortune, only human beings can do this. Birds cannot do it. No other form of life can imagine and create something out of nothing. Have faith, build it, and make it real. Only human beings. It is an extraordinary gift. It depends on how many times you use it. Six days of work, one day of rest. Do not confuse the numbers. Here is the reason. If you rest too much, the weeds take over the garden.
Thinking otherwise is naive. As soon as you have planted, the insects and weeds will come to invade it. So you cannot stay resting for too long. You have to get back to work. 6 days of work. Then rest in the spiritual, in friendship, change the pace. Once you have set a project in motion and want to turn nothing into something, now you must measure your progress. How are you doing? That is how we teach our children. Life expects us to make measurable progress in a reasonable time. Measurable progress in a reasonable time. That is the game of life. Part of this is not just setting the proposed project in motion, but as we begin to work on it, we begin to measure how we are doing. First, what is a reasonable time? You cannot ask someone every 5 minutes, how are you doing now? See? That is too soon. The guy says, "I haven't even left the building yet. Give me a break. We cannot wait 5 years. That is too long.
So there is a reasonable time. Write this down now. What is a reasonable time? One, at the end of the day. A conversation a father should have with his daughter today, because the magic is there. If he waits until tomorrow, the magic might be gone. Today. The next is a week. Write that down. We are usually paid by the week. What I learned to do was change my value in the marketplace, so the check kept getting bigger and bigger. Measure your own progress. Success is a numbers game . We require of our children, how many years do you want your child to spend in fourth grade? About a year, right?
You say," Well, if they are good kids, you would give them three or four years . "You say," No, this is not a game of kindness. This is preparing for the future. This is preparing for challenges and opportunities. You cannot stay in one grade for more than a year. Now write this down. The same should apply to adults. Do not stay more than a year at one level of learning, adult, management, entrepreneurship, leadership of all kinds. Keep up the pace of learning.
Here is the key. Face the truth. If you are only making this much progress, there is no point in trying to fool the world. There is no point in trying to fool anyone else. And especially, don't fool yourself. If over a period of time you have only progressed to a certain point, you have to accept reality and say, "This is the truth. I have to face it. What can I do to start increasing my progress and improving my health?
Improve my income, improve my investments, greatly improve my market value, start learning a second skill and a third and the next language and the next language to increase my value. I have to take action and do it. If you do that, I promise you. One of the greatest motivating factors in the world is progress. And if you measure it, you will get excited. Here is the next one that really increased my income considerably and it is promotion and recognition. Rewarding people for small breakthroughs. I mastered this skill and here is the philosophy behind it. Stay so busy recognizing others that you don't really need recognition for yourself. I mastered this. And do you know how much it pays? A lot of money. Let me give you one more and it has three parts and it is communication . Learn how to influence other people with your language. Of all the things you shouldn't be lazy about is language , because words can work miracles. And I discovered that communication has three parts here. The first, training.
Showing someone how the job works. Showing someone how the business works. We call that training. I became good at that. It paid a lot of money. The next was teaching. Teaching people how life works. Teaching people to set goals. Teaching how to become a leader, manager, entrepreneur. Stepping into bigger opportunities and better challenges. This paid me extraordinary money, but this was what paid the best, learning how to inspire, helping people see themselves better than they are. So , how many skills do I have? A long list. So, we know that for future economic security, especially in these early years of the 21st century, learn more than one skill. Here is number two , it would be good to learn more than one language. Some of my business colleagues who speak three or four languages make three or four million a year. One of my friends from Russia, I remember when he was making 3 million a year, he spoke three languages and this is what he said. I think I'll learn another language and make another
million dollars. Those additional languages are very valuable. When I travel the world, do I have to find someone who speaks more than one language, or am I in serious trouble? I once asked a teacher how many languages a child can learn, and this is what she said:" All the ones you are willing to teach them. "They don't lack the capacity, they don't lack the intelligence, and they certainly don't lack the curiosity. The only thing they lack is a teacher. Learn the simple economic formula that works for everyone, and I can give it to you in just a couple of sentences. A simple economic formula. Children can understand it, anyone can understand it . Anyone who wants to make money. Here is the sentence for your notes. We are paid for bringing value to the marketplace. That is how simple economics is for anyone who wants to make money. You are paid for bringing value to the marketplace. The marketplace is people. Now, the value we bring is one part, a product or a service, but here is the other part,
the value you become. What you become pays much more than what you bring. When I understood that, then my mentor told me," Work harder on yourself than you do on your job. If you work hard at your job, you can make a living. "Then he said," If you work hard on yourself, you can make a fortune. "Ah.
